Jamestown is a town in Rhode Island that is located on Conanicut Island. The island is located in Narragansett Bay about 25 miles south of Providence just to the west of Newport, RI. The island is 9 miles long and 1 mile wide. There is a large amount of open space and the roads are lightly traveled which allows visitors to enjoy biking and walking around the island. Jamestown is full of hidden treasures such as small beaches and winding trails that make the small island a great weekend getaway. Not only is Jamestown picturesque but it also has an interesting historical background. In the early 1300s Native Americans made their home on Conanicut Island and were the lone settlers until the 1600s. The Europeans, mainly English, began to settle on the island after they made arrangements with the Native Americans to use the land for their sheep grazing. In 1775 during the Revolutionary War, the British Navy arrived in Newport and shortly after invaded Jamestown. The British attacked Fort Getty and Fort Wetherill. Today these sights are RI State Parks and are a great place to visit.
